Weekly Gratitude

I am going to post my weekly gratitude here so I can update through the week and whatever I have posted will automatically post on Saturday mornings.

I have a grateful heart for:

Social Media

Getting to keep up with Serena and her shenanigans is great.  Not sure what my mom did back in the day when my sister went away.

Starbucks Iced Coffee

enough said.  no starbucks near by but I have some from the grocery store and it hits the spot on a Monday morning.

Amazon Echo or Any Video Chat

I figured out that I can video chat her with the Echo Show and cook dinner at the same time.

Three hour phone conversations with my stepmom

I have not talked to her in forever.  We both laughed so hard.

Dinner with my brother and niece

I love my siblings and love when I get to spend time with them.

Starbucks Fall Flavors

Two reasons.  Salted Caramel Mocha and CHRISTMAS IS COMING (WHITE PEPPERMINT MOCHA)

Facebook Memories

Monica's bachelorette party.  2019 family cruise.  lots of fun memories

A good dentist

I have avoided the dentist like the plague for years and my teeth show it.  However, I have started going to an awesome dentist and little by little I am getting a smile I am proud of

A patient husband

We have conflicting schedules and I tend to handle things not the way he would.  It causes chaos sometimes.

Close knit family

I look forward to our group messages.  planned outings and spur of the moment fire side drinks.

Single serve wine bottles

no explanation needed.

Dual Dental Coverage

I have been working on my smile...  :)  it is expensive.  However I was pleasantly surprised when I paid $165 for a consultation and root canal and got $145 back in the mail.  Win!

My daughter being 2 hours away
She is close enough for a quick meal visit but far enough she won't come home all the time.

My parents
They will do anything for their kids.

Family Dynamic

Our family dynamic has changed again.  We have always done things kind of differently.  We had our oldest before marriage.  We got married, bought a house, and added our second child.  When I had our daughter I always imagined that we would have kids close together but in reality, we were not ready for this, and by the time we were ready and had our second child our kids were 7(ish) years apart.  People thought we were crazy.  People thought our kids wouldn't be close.  People thought that it would not work out.  Having kids with a big age gap worked for our family.  The kids obviously still fight like siblings fight but they are close.  Our daughter has taken care of her brother while we work and overall just rocked the big sister status.

So now with our daughter gone, we are doing the only child thing again and our son is kind of lost.  He is used to his sister being here to not only do the chores but she is who he confides the most stuff to.

He seems to be adjusting pretty well though.  People were right.  Kids are resilient.

Nothing but time

Since we are trying not to do too much other than work, grocery shopping and the occasional meal out I have a lot of time to study for my series 7.  I am actually following the plan set out by Kaplan and doing their calendar.  By the schedule, I have set out for myself (starting today and ending October 12th).  I only need to devote about 1 hour and 49 minutes a day.  So for two hours.  That is doable.  On weekends it allows me to have time for family but I can also do more if I know I have a hectic week coming up and weekdays I can easily devote two hours a night after work and dinner.

I have lost count on how many times I attempted this test.  To be honest it is an alarmingly high amount of attempts.  I was completing my bachelor's degree for most of those attempts and I do not recommend doing that.  I was forced into a 6 month sabbatical after my last attempt.  My window opened up in August and is close in December.

My plan is to finish the materials using the calendar method in Kaplan's website.  I will finish my materials on October 12th.  Take an online class the 13-15th and test on the 28th.  If I fail, I will have between November 29th and December 31st to retake it.  That is when my Kaplan materials expire.  When I finish this round, I will have my Series 66 to take.

My goal is to finish my Series 7 by the end of the year.  Completely doable right?  I mean I cannot do anything else so...

edited:  by time this posts, I will have 5 days down...I wrote this on day 1 (Sunday).

Junior High Pandemic Schooling

I have talked about sending a kid to college during a pandemic.  But as most people know we have two kids in very different parts of their life.  Our son is in junior high.  Things are different.  He like everyone else missed the last 3 months of school last year.  However, he had the luxury of having a sister take care of him while mom and dad worked.  Doing remote learning with very little preparation was a struggle, but having a sister home was helpful.  Especially a sister who knew common core math.

Now as we face a new school year I had contemplated changing his schools to the private school but had reservations about how this would affect him socially.  He already struggles making friends at his current school that he has gone to since pre-k so I could not imagine such a big change during junior high.  We decided not to judge his current school on the lack of prep time last school year and hope that this year would be better.

We set out to start school but the Friday before we were notified that break was extended two more weeks with the hope that our cases would go down in our county.  If not, once this two week buffer period was up, we would start remote learning.

Remote learning is going to be different.  He gets a Chromebook this year which should help as last year he used his sister's device or mine.  However, I am nervous has to how the instruction will be taking on and pray that there will be zoom instruction and a lot more guidance than last year.  He needs more than two full-time work outside the home parents can provide.

So I pray for grace and patience this school year for both my son and me.

Life update - college covid style

She has been at school for 7 days now.  We left her 6 days ago.  She had a rough patch with trying to do band and not feeling like she fit in but she has overcome that.  She is still in constant communication with us.  Not sure how much of that is being homesick, how much is because she has the time and how much is just habit.  I have been trying to take her lead and not nag her too much.

There has been a lot of communication this week just with changes to her schedule and class formats.  Her school does this cool thing where books are $9.95/credit hour and included in the tuition.  However, with many classes moving to an online or hybrid format she has had to purchase books.  The most expensive being $110 so far.  Totaling $200 so far for three books.

Going to school during a pandemic is different.  However, I think her school has done an excellent job of trying to maintain some normalcy (responsibly).  I know they seem to be getting a lot of flack from their community but the students seem to be responsible (for now).  They did grab and go craft kits, movies under the stars and glow bingo.  All socially distanced.

Serena has met some new friends and put herself out there.  I was worried with going to school with her grade school bestie she would navigate to the known to avoid the unknown.  However, tonight her bestie was not up for the movie and she put herself out there and found people to go with.  Even though they restarted the moving about half a dozen times to get the closed captioning to work she seemed to enjoy it.  She learned some valuable lessons -- use the bathroom first and bring bug spray (which she has in her room).

She has ventured to her new bank twice, done laundry and dishes and walmart twice (once for groceries and once for a necessary cord to get her printer to connect).  She seems to be figuring things out and I am super proud of her for that.

Subscription Boxes

The amount of subscription boxes available is outrageous.  I always see Fatfitfun which is about $40-50 a month and Causebox always floats on my feed.  Those are not in my price range of what I would want to spend every month.

I have considered sending her Ipsy, Birchbox, Casely or Succulent Studio.  Those are all under $20 a month.

Someone recommended boxycharm which is midline between FFF and the cheaper boxes.

I have not decided on one yet and I do not plan on doing 12 months.  I might do 3 months - September, October and November then maybe February, March, April.  I am leaning towards succulents and I kind of like the case one.  or succulents and Ipsy.

Looking for suggestions.  I really do not want to spend more than $20 a month.  Not looking to break the bank but ways for her to get fun and functional mail while away.  She loves succulents and has joked about becoming the crazy plant lady from tik tok.  I guess this is a set up from the crazy unmarried cat lady she has aspired to be.  A husband and kids do not fit in her plan (for now).

Care Packages

So I sent off my first care package to her in college.  I cannot wait to send more but will be trying to limit them to once a quarter.  I sent her a 3/4 zip shirt with her school logo on it.  She knew she was getting this.  Just it was received after she left.  I sent her some pistachios in honor of grandpa Jim whose birthday is on the 22nd.  I sent her some Mio drops for her water.  Some stamps because she brought note cards to send people thank yous, notes, etc.  Some colored pencils for the coloring book she brought.  3 small decorative pumpkins.  Some gel clings for Halloween.  She already had some fall ones but couldn't resist the Halloween ones.  Some Halloween garland and fall and Halloween string lights.  I also sent several inspirational cards that she can open on days that she needs a pick me up or misses home or just wants to for fun.

I cannot wait to send her more.  What do you recommend sending in a care package?  I do not want to send a bunch of candy.  She is trying to not eat a lot of that.

Finding their own way

Probably one of my biggest struggles as a parent is figuring out when to step up and help and when to let them fall.  Even with an 18 year old there is an overwhelming urge to want to fix things or make decisions for her.  I am learning that is not helping her and learning to take a step back.

This first week has proven to challenge my ability to do this.  Serena was so excited when we left her on Monday.  She had a "free" day before starting band on Tuesday.  I talked to her Tuesday night she seemed a little off.  Wednesday night she was in a mood but also busy and mentioned she wanted to video chat her brother.  She was over band.  I could tell.  I told her to give it more time because it was new.  She was also having issues with her shin.  This is an ongoing issue she had in high school band too with shin splints.  It was throbbing.  I encouraged her to keep up with it.  Thursday morning things kind of came to a head that she was most definitely done.  I wanted to encourage her to keep with it two weeks.  She didn't think she had that long to decide and ultimately her heart was not in it.  The band director tried talking to her but I think it was too late.  I cannot compliment this band director enough on how he handled the situation.  He talked to me (with her permission) and even though she dropped band he noticed her anxiety seemed to be at an all-time high and arranged for various people to check on her from the band.  Maybe she will join again one day but right now it is not for her.  I know it is important for her to be involved not only to keep her occupied and reduce her homesick feeling but also important for med school applications but I also do not want her to be miserable.  Starting next week she is going to have a pretty full schedule with 16 credit hours plus working.  however, within a few hours of dropping band, with the help of one of the people the band director connected her with, she found her way to the yearbook club and the newspaper. That made this mom heart happy.

Talking to her since then I have noticed a difference in her demeanor and she seems happy and not as stressed.  Band is great but if it is not for her right now that is fine and I need to learn to let her make those decisions.  I was stuck between how much do I push or encourage her and how much do I let her make her own decision and learn from that.  I took a step back on this and realized she is so very capable to making her decisions and truly thinking things through.

First Week

The first week of what you probably ask.  This is the first week of our new routine and adventure.  We sent our oldest off to college on Sunday.  My husband and I took her, helped unload all of her belongings, and set up a few things for her before she decided she was ready to finish her room on her own because she wanted to know where everything is.  The logical part of me knew that was probably best but the sentimental part of me wished that I could have stayed to help or have gone back to see how it looks.  Although we have come a long way with technology and we can do video chat and do instant messages to each other.

I thought ending my daughter's senior year during a pandemic was going to be the weirdest thing to go through but turns out sending her out into the world during one is scarier.

Sending your kid to college during a pandemic means (for us) fewer visits to avoid carrying COVID back and forth between households.  It means not seeing her dorm room or other areas of the campus.  It means likely no parent weekend.  It means scheduled move-in times with smaller crowds.  That would seem like a benefit but it was odd.  Kind of a ghost town and just not what we imagined.  It means wearing a mask to move in.  It means not moving freely around the campus.  It meant once we left campus we could not come back.  It was weird.

For her, it means wearing a mask whenever she is not in her room, and when she is in her room or another room with more than 1 person.  It means distanced dining.  It means hybrid, online, and very few in-person classes.  It means altered schedules, social distanced mixers and fun things being planned.  It means signing up for covid testing.  It means moving back home for 2 weeks if you are positive.

But silver lining she is she is ON campus.  She has the opportunity to have a somewhat normal college experience.  She is making friendships and finding her way.

My Travel Accessories

Well ever since I got the travel bug and I like to plan, I get asked a lot about the products that I use/bought for travel.  I did not make these purchases all at once but here are the ones that make my fav list.

I have linked my ideas list at Amazon here.

A pill organizer!
I use this for Disney, cruise or even traveling for work so that I have several types of meds with me.  Benadryl, Immodium, Ibuprofen, Acetominophen, etc.  Especially on a cruise ship where access to a Walgreens is not an option and the ship store is expensive.

I have also used this for work trips for my jewelry.

Infinity Scarf.
I know what is so special about an infinity scarf.  This one is magical.  Like seriously, the best infinity scarf I have ever owned.  It has a pocket.  AND I just saw they make some with TWO pockets.  I have not tried that one yet because the 1 pocket scart is sufficient.  I use this for traveling (especially airport travel).  Throw my phone, id, debit, boarding pass and earbuds in it and essentially once I get through security I am not going in and out of my bag for stuff.  I have what I need and while on the plane it is all very much reachable.  I even wear it often when we go shopping.  Nobody has any clue until I go to pay.   This scarf comes complete with a funny airport story about a man, his wife and his fascination of my secret pocket scarf.  That's a story for another time.  :)

 Small backpack.
I have a few that I really like and maybe this should be a post all on its own.  I love this sling bag by Thirty One.  If you don't have a 31 lady, I can hook you up with mine...I like that I can have it towards the front if I am not as trusting or swing it to the back.  It has pockets.  And my stuff stays dry.  I have been in some pretty heavy rain with this and the contents stay dry.  May not be good for long periods of time in a torrential downpour but I did get caught in some rain going from a building to a car with my daughter's senior pics and they survived so there's that.

My next purse is another Thirty One item but sadly it is discontinued.  However you can sometimes find it on Amazon, Mercari, ebay, or maybe a thirty one consultant who has cash and carry.  This is the Vary You Backpack Purse.  This is not my image  You can use it for crossbody or backpack.  That large zipper you see is big enough to slide a normal size notebook or planner in it.

I do not personally use this one much but my husband does.  This is his go to travel backpack.  It is sturdy.  It cleans well and holds a lot.

I LOVE this one.  We have two of these.  It is perfect size for a kid or just a mom who doesn't have as much to carry.

This next item is more purely Disney related.  The Magic Bands are your key to everything at Disney, especially if staying on resort and while it does not happen often they can fall off if you pop it just right.  You can buy little slides to put on it to keep the band on even if it pops "apart"

Packing Cubes.  I am still learning the science behind this.  Although we did this for our last cruise and it made it so much easier to pack but not sure it saved us a ton of room.  It did save us some room, helped with organization and kept some of the arguments at bay.  We have 4 prints of these and I packed each of us in a different print then in the suitcases I crossed packed.  This way if 1 suit case went missing not 1 person was without clothes.  We got a little bit of everything in one suitcase.  Having the cubes kept made it easy so that we did not have to rummage through other people's clothes to find our own.  Xander wasn't rummaging through Serena's, etc.

I use these tags.  I know they are see through, but I like the way they attach (almost impossible to fall off) because you loop them through and do not "buckle" them.

So last year my husband got me a new samsonite luggage set.  Seriously watch their site for deals, but that is a post of its own.  I had the option of dark gray, purple or white.  We went with dark gray but dark gray is generic and used by so many so I attached these poms.  Yes I think my husband thought I was a little nuts at first but on our cruise it was beneficial.  Between the airport carousel and luggage lined in the hallways of the cruise ship...it was nice.

Straws!  So yes I am a straw snob and I prefer to drink out of a straw.  However, many companies like Carnival and Disney are starting to get rid of straws (environmentally friendly) and moving to paper straws that disintegrate easily after sitting in a drink for a while or edible (again -- gets wet and soggy) so I brought my own on the cruise ship and it was nice.  Just pay attention when they are clearing drinks...or your straws may disappear.

I bought better water shoes this year for our cruise.  They were nice.  They were comfortable like tennis shoes but could get wet and drained the excess water.  I did not trust them for our Mayan ruins hike (wore tennis shoes) but did wear them around the ship a couple times on the lido deck.  and had every intention of wearing on our beach day to Cozumel but that was canceled.

Cruise?  Disney?  Band camp?  summer theater?
You get the gist.  These are nice.  Each one comes in their own pouch and carabiner clip.  It was equally nice because we had four different colors that happened to match the colors of our waterproof phone pouches, toothbrushes and loufas.  I actually did that by accident. I evidently really liked blue, green, teal and pink.

My final product that I use frequently at home too and not just on vacation is this phone charger.  You can charge up to 2 phones at once.  And it is solar powered!  Perfect for on a cruise ship, theme park, ball game, etc.

I am not that high maintenance when I travel but these are things that I find easier when I travel or just nice to have.  Again I accumulated most of this since 2015 and some of it I use beyond vacationing.

What's your favorite go to travel item?

Day 3

GRATITUDE
*new opportunities (to learn)
*textbook rentals and saving $
*coffee

I have 2 article summaries to write, a marketing plan to submit, 5 chapters to read and a test to study for and I am not stressed anymore.  Go figure.  I took a chill pill and I am calm.  It will all get done.  Just might need to make some sacrifices (sorry dart tournament).

Day 2

Gratitude
*Connecting with old friends
*having an understanding professor
*a boss who takes what I say into consideration

In the last 24 hours I have reconnected with an old friend.  Haven't seen them in a while and distance is a factor but it's nice to talk to old friends.  I decided I need to focus more on a few relationships in my life and decided to reach out to a friend that I have lost connection with and it is a connection in my life that has been vitally important so it is worth reconnecting.

I have also decided to focus and see which relationships are worth keeping and which relationships are clearly not salvageable.  One of these will be harder to let go than others, but in the last run it will be the best for all involved.

Wish me luck as this will be a very difficult step.

Day 1 - Redo 2016 Recap

So last year I started this blog about being happy and writing about 3 things I am grateful for and then a positive story from the past 24 hours.  Evidently I watched a webcast about being happy.  Kind of wish I would have bookmarked that.  However, reading back on that week today made me happy so I am going to go back to this.

Day 5

Gratitude
Extended bonus family
flexible schedule
community theater

After picking up Serena from Hannibal, we stayed in Quincy because I did not want to make the drive back home late at night.  The kids got to swim in the pool before we checked out and then we made our way to Nauvoo, IL.  For those of you who do not know, this is where my stepmom is from.  This is also where we held my dad's memorial service.  And while he is not buried there, it is hard to explain but I feel closer to dad in Nauvoo than Chicago.  I think partly because this is where his brick is in the veteran's memorial park, partly because this is where he wanted to live his last years and partly because he loved Nauvoo.  He said it reminded him of Clinton County.

That being said, we love going to see Ronnie and Sandy.  We are always welcomed there so we decided we were already in Quincy we would drive up and see them.  Bonus that it is Ronnie's birthday tomorrow so that was nice to see him and we brought him some coffee from Starbucks to enjoy every morning.  They were happy to see us.  We had lunch, went out to the field to see the Jamie set up to feed the calves and then back to the house and visited the horses.  It was nice to see them.  I need to get up there more to see them.

Day 4

Gratitude
new friendships
GPS (when they work)
patient kid - Xander did pretty well sitting in the car for 3 hours and then a concert for 2 hours

Today was the end of Serena's week at Summer Worship University.  She had a blast and I got to see what she worked on the week she was there.  It was neat to see it all come together.  She played several songs on her clarinet with the band and sang some songs with the choir.  The music and message was very uplifting  and happy.  I walked out of there feeling happy (and tired).  If you have the chance send your kids to SWU.  It's July 9 through 13 next year.  Serena cannot wait to go back.

Day 3

Gratitude
my parents
supportive husband
my kids

Positivity
So Xander is an only child this week.  Neither one of our kids are by any means neglected but it has been nice to have this one on one time with him.  His personality is enough to make you smile most days.  He only gets the only child feeling once in a blue moon.  I kind of feel bad because Serena does not really get that ever anymore because Xander never goes anywhere yet .  the only way she gets it is if we do a girls shopping trip.  We may need more of those soon.  But in the meantime I enjoy my Xander time even if it's been divided with homework too

Wednesday, July 12, 2017

Day 2

Gratitude
Friendships that last
online courses
technology to keep in touch with people

Positivity
Getting to go to dinner with a friend that I consider to be not only a friend but a mentor.  I seem to call her on her my most important decisions.  Leaving my job, taking a new job, starting school.  She has had a pretty positive impact on my life and I am grateful to be her friend.

Tuesday, July 11, 2017

Day 1

I watched a pretty interesting webcast about changing our outlook on life and trying to make an effort to add positivity to our lives in order to make us happier people instead of having the thought that we will be happy once we achieve something.  Because once we achieve that, then we want to achieve something else, and once we achieve that we will wait for something else before being happy and so on....

The webcast I watched had some suggestions for happiness and he said to try them for 21 days.  I am going to make an honest effort.

3 things I am grateful for:
* the ability to send my daughter to a camp she is enjoying
* a job that I look forward to going to every single day
* the opportunity to go back to school

The next step is to write a short blog about 1 thing that brought positivity or happiness in my life in the last 24 hours.

Serena is away at camp.  This is her second time going away to camp and the first time at this camp.  It was a new camp.  Exploring her faith more as well as getting some band/instrument time in.  She is getting to spend 5 days with a new friend that she has become closer to but does not see as often, which is probably a blessing.  This is teaching her you do not need to see a friend every day to be friends.  You do not have to do everything together to be friends.  It is exposing her to new people, a new faith and new possibilities.  I have gotten to talk to her twice in the last 24 hours and she is happy.  She loves the food (-yes that was a highlight for her), she is enjoying time with her friend/roommate and even met new friends in band (this is big for her as she would normally shy away if with people she does not know.  I loved hearing how happy she was when i talked to her.  She is truly enjoying herself and loving every minute of it.  She sent this picture to me because it made her giggle.  I had gotten her and Alyssa some washi tape for bible journaling to use in their journals that Tanya had bought them (plus she got a journal from her women's faith class at camp).  She was journaling tonight about her day and decided to use the Amen tape for the first time.  She sent this to me with "well that just happened."  The beginning of the tape was cut off and she did not notice it until she put it on the page but today's page says "Men Amen Amen Amen Amen."  She goes you would think they would watch where they cut off the tape.  Back to the real topic, she is having fun and seems to be enjoying all aspects of the camp:  the friendships, ministry, worship, band.  I cannot wait to get her on Friday and hear all about it.

See ya later or maybe not as much

Now that I caught everyone's attention.  I will probably be around minimally for the next 3 years.

After much deliberation, thought, prayer, meetings, counseling, discussion, etc, I have decided with my husband's (and kids) support to go back to college.  I am a college graduate (from Hickey) but only got my diploma because I, at the age of 18, thought I knew it all and just wanted to be done.

For years I have contemplated going back but never took the thought much further than that....a thought.  I always felt bad going back.

Why now?  Hickey contacted me because January 2017 is the last time I am eligible to enroll in their bridge program to graduate with a Bachelor's from that school.  After talking to a good friend and mentor, I compared the programs at Lindenwood to the program at Hickey and have decided Lindenwood is the best option for my family.

I registered for my first cluster of classes, and already have my first assignment, due the first day of class.  I start my communications cluster on January 5th.  The last piece waiting to finalize is my financial aid award letter which I will not be getting for a few weeks but people are guessing what my big news is and I have gotten some pm's all over the board.

That being said, I will be devoting less time online, and less time on extra curricular activities and more time on school for the next three years.

I am nervous and excited all at the same time.  Am I stupid for waiting 17 years to go back?  Am I stupid for going back now at the age of 35?  Am I stupid for going to college when in a few years we will be sending one to college?  The answer to all of this is no.  I am not stupid. This will only benefit me.  I know this now but I was terrified of making this leap and the implications it will have on my family but I am hopeful that the short term disturbances in our every day life will be worth it's weight in gold when I am done with school.
